Self Sabotage vs. External Criticism: What kills more dreams?

Some call it being a perfectionist, some think they are simply inadequate and some believe they are suffering from imposter syndrome. Regardless of what you associate these negative feelings with, they all have the power to stop you from achieving your dreams of becoming a successful entrepreneur.

Stop thinking that everything you put into this world isn’t good enough!

You’re not going to get everything done perfectly the first time because let’s face it, you’re only human. When you start comparing yourself to other people and when you compare your work to someone else’s, you become your own worst critic. The anxiety within you fuels your fear.

Comparisons are toxic and only exist in a fear based world.

Fear is destruction and when you align with such thoughts, you are causing your own demise. I’d like to ask you, right here and right now…

What are you afraid of? What will someone’s negative feedback actually do to you?

The possibility of judgement causes you so much fear and anxiety that it stops you from doing anything at all. When you become so paralyzed in fear you’re preventing yourself from having the opportunity to be judged because you lack the crucial step of creation.

If you are so determined to be judged, why not give the world something to comment on?

Your fear of judgment prevents you from receiving any judgment at all.

Create, damn it! The world needs your unique take on the world.

I’m sure you’ve heard the saying, sticks and stones will break my bones but words will never hurt me. Use this children’s lesson as an adult. It holds more relevance now than ever.

I promise you, your feelings of inadequacy do not make you inadequate. It’s time you learn how to find the confidence within yourself to share your work without becoming attached to the outcome or people’s responses.

These few steps will help you bring your ideas to life:

  1. Write down all of the steps it takes to execute the creative task you are thinking about. From start to finish.
  2. Don’t over analyze your list and please do not make a list where you’re telling yourself to make another list because this one “isn’t good enough”
  3. Take action! Start at the top of your list and work your way to the bottom. One simple step at a time.

Remember, plans mean NOTHING if you don’t act upon them.

So you’ve mapped out your plan of idea execution, you’ve brought your idea to life and into the world, and now it’s time for the dreaded feedback.

As I stated earlier, you are your own worst critic.

Keep the following in mind when it comes to coping with the anxiety this process brings on:

  1. Don’t let the small setbacks get you down. If something doesn’t go exactly the way you planned for it to happen, tell yourself that tomorrow is a new day with 24 brand spanking new hours to get back on track. Nothing is ever a lost opportunity.
  2. Congratulate yourself on every goal you accomplish. Even when you don’t think the task is worthy of a pat on the back. Every step during the creative process deserves a round of applause.
  3. Focus only on what you can control. You can’t predict the reaction of other people but you can make sure you put your best effort along with your heart and soul into everything you create. If you’re passionate about what you’re creating and your work exudes that passion, the world will love it too.
  4. Don’t take on too much at one time. It will cause you to burn out and stop working altogether as opposed to your initial idea of working overtime. Pace yourself, you have all the time in the world to bring these ideas to life. When you take on too much at one time, there’s no way to fully develop your best ideas and give them the love they need to bloom.
